Discover Hidden Hawaii

The quieter half of the islands, visited with respect.

Plan a Quieter Hawaii Trip

Hidden Hawaii Is Mostly Hiding in Plain Sight

Hidden Hawaii is not a secret map of forbidden waterfalls. It is the quieter half of the islands that many visitors never slow down for: plantation towns with a single main street, beaches used mostly by local families, upland farm roads, botanical gardens with nobody in them on a weekday morning, and the two small islands, Molokai and Lanai, that most visitors never reach.

Discover Hidden Hawaii is a guide to those places, island by island, and to visiting them in a way that respects the people who live there. That means staying on public land, honoring closures and sacred places, and never treating a no-trespassing sign as a challenge. For the famous sights, hotels and dining, our island guides already do the job; this site sticks to the quieter side.

Five Rules for Exploring Hidden Hawaii

  • Public and open only. If a place is on private land, closed by the state or county, or marked kapu (forbidden), do not go.
  • Reserve where required. Several popular parks now need advance reservations; book on the state parks reservation site.
  • Leave it as you found it. No stacking rocks, no carving, no taking sand, rocks or plants.
  • Be a good neighbor. Park legally, keep noise down in residential areas, pull over to let local traffic pass.
  • Know the ocean. Quiet beaches often have no lifeguards. If in doubt, stay out.

Questions About Hidden Hawaii

Where is hidden Hawaii?

Mostly in plain sight: the small towns, side roads and quieter coasts that most visitors drive past on the way to famous sights. Think Hilo and the Hamakua Coast on Hawaii Island, Upcountry and East Maui, Oahu’s windward and Waianae sides, Kauai’s west side, and the islands of Molokai and Lanai.

Is it OK to visit secret spots I see on social media?

Only if they are legally open. Many viral spots are on private land, in closed areas or in places that are culturally sensitive or dangerous. Check that a place is open and public before you go, and respect every closure sign.

Is lesser-known Hawaii cheaper?

Often a little. Small towns away from resort areas have more modest inns, vacation rentals and local restaurants. The bigger saving is time: fewer crowds, easier parking and no lines.
